This Fall we're heading back out west. COVID will be in our thoughts as we plan for adventures while we stay safe! Our plans are to head first to Colorado, then zip over to Utah. Lots of hiking and biking are planned along our route.

A couple of days in Savannah

After a nice stop at a small botanical garden just off Interstate 95, we set up camp at Skidaway Island State Park.  Less than 15 miles to old Savannah, this was the perfect place to overnight.  On arrival, we got out our bikes, and rode the trail through the woods, by an old still, and by the marshland of Skidaway Island.

The next morning, we drove to the Visitor Center in the heart of "old" Savannah, where we took one of the designated RV parking spots.  Then our walking tour began.  First with a stop at the restored 1859 Mercer mansion where the movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, was filmed.  Next on to the third oldest Jewish congregation in the United States, Mickve Israel, founded in 1733.  Of the 42 who arrived 34 were Sephardic Jews who had survived the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions. We toured their third sanctuary, built in 1876 in a Gothic style.  Fascinating to hear the history and the success of the original and later immigrants; many being prominent in Savannah politics and affairs.  In their museum they still show the original Torah brought over with the initial settlers.

Following our walking of this beautiful old city, we headed to The Lady and Sons restaurant...Paula Dean...for good Southern country food.  And what luck, Paula was there to join us!
Finally back to the parking lot where we extracted our motorhome and headed back to Skidaway Island.

Now fully oriented, the next morning we drove back to the VC parking lot and secured an easier in&out spot.   Took a 4 mile walking tour through the many neighborhoods and parks of Savannah before ending our tour with a great lunch stop at Vic's on the River.  Before leaving we had to have some shrimp & grits...and they were good!

We had planned to spend this last night at the Visitor Center, where you can sleep in your RV.  But, the temperatures were in the mid 80s, we couldn't put our slideouts out, nor run our air conditioner.  So we smartly, said goodbye and drove a day earlier to Michael & Jess's house.
